Fantasy Art, Literature & Films
Having done
a fair bit of research on Fantasy Art, Literature and Films, I have decided to
create fantastic art visual be it Narrative or a Non sequential array of
imagery. Fantastic art has always intrigued me and I would like to base my
thesis on this subject. What I would like to create is my own interpretation of
the subject with a more modern style. I have not attempted fantastic Art before
and would like to further dwell into the subject. Fantastic Art is massive and
this herculean task cannot be achieved in a short space of time. My imagery
will solely be based on Adult contemporized folkloric tales and with a
Victorian essence to it. The Victorian Era in itself is a massive subject, for
that reason alone I will be concentrating on the Architectural side of things. Even
though the Era mentioned is Victorian I will be basing it off a more Modern
scenario. Comic examples include the Alan Moore Classic – “V for Vendetta”.
Hans
Christian Anderson fairytales will also influence my project. Han Christian
Anderson has always inspired me a kid, and I grew up reading a lot of his
stories. My Major influence would however be the Classic tale “The Pied Piper of Hamelin”. The Pied
Piper had 4 Films made, none of them earning any commercial success whatsoever,
the best being “The Pied Piper of Hamelin (1957 Film)”. Another 1986 Czechoslovak animated film called
“The Rat Catcher” was created and was screened at the 1986 Cannes Film
Festival.
Not too much
followed after that just bits here and there and the folklore went missing for
a while. Creating unique artwork is almost impossible in today’s world, but
what we can create in a mix of different inspirations and stories and come up
with something really beautiful if done right.
Coming back
to the actual concept, what I want to create is not a direct rendition of the
classic pied piper tale but focus towards the environment style, the mood and
colors. Extensive research will play a pivotal role if I am to succeed in
achieving my goal. My Goal isn’t too ambitious but it isn’t a walk in the park
either. I will be going out and filming similar location types and doing a fair
bit of experimentation.
My top
priority is nailing down the exact mood I would like to go for, the rest is
secondary.
My film
references include (Subject to Change further on) – Lemony Snickets, Mary &
Max, Corpse’s Bride, Box Trolls, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie & The
Chocolate Factory, Brazil, The adventures of Baron Munchausen, Edward
Scissorhand, Harry Potter Chronicles, Pan’s Labyrinth etc.
